Find and Keep

1.
Every year I plant tomatoes, lettuce, carrots, greens and strawberries in my garden. When I harvest the vegetables and the strawberries and the crop in the field, it is left unattended. And of course, the weeds grow and cover the strawberry plants. And when March comes I have to find them, dig them up and save them so that I can plant them again. I don’t see all of them sowhen I plough the field, the ones that I didn’t find are lost.

There are times when this happens in our spiritual life. If you don’t cultivate your soul for a long time the weeds (vices) invade everything and you lose some of your strawberries (virtues).

2.
A friend of mine feeds his chickens with grain and barley. He has a box where he keeps the sacks of grain. But he found out that rats come and eat the sacks of barley that are outside of the box. Now that he has seen that the birds also come to eat the barley because the rats have made holes in the sacks, he decided to put things in order. He is going to put everything in the box because it is tight and neither the birds nor the rats can get in. That is what we should do with our hearts: enclose all of our virtues inside so that the rats (bad friends) and the birds (the demons) cannot eat what I need to live.
