The Honeybee

HAVEN’T YOU EVER WONDERED WHAT GOES ON INSIDE A BEE HIVE? HERE’S YOUR OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN! PAY ATTENTION!

The bee hive is made of honeycomb which is made of beeswax. The bees themselves produce this beeswax and then they form it with their mouths to make the honeycomb.

Each cell has six sides and every cell is exactly the same size.

The cells within the comb are used to raise young bees and tostore honey and pollen.

THE DRONES
(500-1,000)
THE WORKERS
  (30,000-60,000)

Worker bees have a lot of different jobs in the hive.  When young, they are called house bees and work in the hive by constructing, taking care of the eggs, caring for the queen and drones, cleaning, regulating the temperature and defending the hive.
Older workers are called field bees.

They are the ones that go outside the hive to gather nectar, pollen, and water.

The queen bee is normally the mother of all the other bees in the hive. The drones are male bees and the workers are female bees.

The egg from which a queen bee develops is exactly like that of all the other worker bees.

However, the queen is fed a special royal jelly and because of this she becomes a queen bee and flies off to found her own colony. There can only be one queen bee in each bee colony.

Honey bees are the only insects that produce a food consumed by  humans – honey!

Honey bees have a bright color pattern to warn their predators that they have a weapon to defend themselves.

Honey bees look at the world through compound eyes.
These are made of hundreds of
small simple eyes.

Worker honey bees live for about 4 weeks in the spring or summer but up to 6 weeks during the winter.

Even though they usually find food closer, honey bees can fly up to 8 miles from their nest in search of food.

They can fly up to 15 miles per hour.

All the female beees have a stinger located at the end of the abdomen.

A worker bee dies as soon as it stings anything. Only the queen bee can sting several times without dying.

Many types of insects consume nectar, but only honey bees use this nectar to make honey.  They make a lot so that they will have plenty of food for the winter.
