What’s your name? Carlos J Perez
How would you define yourself?
Light hearted, down to earth, love feel-good music and literature.
How old are you?
20 years old.
Do you consider yourself a practicing Catholic?
I would say yes, I’ve never been astray from God, I always pray daily and attend mass every Sunday. I keep God in mind in all my decisions and doings and I never question my beliefs.
What do you study?
Psychology & social sciences, and English literature. I want to pursue a journalism career or general communications in the future.
What are your hobbies?
I exercise everyday; I run a couple miles ever since I can remember. Books are my major source of entertainment; my favorites are Fyodor Dostoievski, James Joyce, Becker, and Setterfield. I usually spent time alone, listen to alternative, easy-listening, country and shoegaze. I’m not that interesting.
What do you think the youth of today lack?
A lot. I know 20 years lived is not much to claim such thing, but I believe they shouldn’t let themselves be absorbed by the world and avoid giving into anyone’s influence. They should be who they are without fearing if they’re accepted or not. I think they try too hard to fit in social circles they lose themselves in them letting social pressure overcome them.
What would you change in your life?
I don’t think I would want to change anything, because I feel everything in it has lead me to both good and bad but its been worth it, otherwise I wouldn’t be here and wouldn’t have met the wonderful people I have.
What do you like in your life?
The fact I’m aware of the bright side of things, and having a very supportive family.
What is necessary to become responsible? Do you consider yourself responsible
Commitment, discipline and will. I would say I do consider myself responsible, because I meet my duties, and also because I evaluate all the outcomes of every move I make before I carry them out.
When do you pray to God?
Every night, and sometimes in the mornings. I thank the lord for everything he grants us with and even for those things he doesn’t, because he knows our best interest.
Do you have any defects?
But of course! I’m not much of a patient person; I don’t like waiting in long lines and anything putting my patience to test. Sometimes I’m a control freak and sometimes I want to carry in my hands more than I can carry.
What virtue would you like to have?
Be more patient and learn how to enjoy ‘today’ and stop worrying so much about ‘tomorrow’.
Is it true that the majority live in appearance?
Generalizing, I would say yes. I think our society puts too much emphasis in looks or in the physical. I think society is very shallow because it judges basing itself on the exterior.
What would you tell a Young person who is searching for a meaning in his or her life?
Be yourself, come closer to God, look outside-in and ask yourself what you really want. I would help him realize about the good things that make up for his person and I would advise to think the good things outweigh the bad ones. Lastly, I would tell him something someone once told me a couple years ago which really moved me, “If you don’t want to look back, and are afraid of looking forward, then look beside you and I’ll be there to help you”.
Is it necessary to try everything in order to know everything?
No. I think awareness is the principle of suffering. Sometimes, we’re better off not knowing. I think there are things that shouldn’t be aware of because usually one knows the end result of these because of others’ experiences, so, why make a mistake and hurt yourself when you can avoid it?
Where can happiness be found?
I consider happiness as a series of events that make up for a sense of well being or being happy. Happiness can be reached by living healthily, doing what we find most meaning in, and having a close relationship with God.
How can one obtain eternal life?
Serving God.
