When I went to Ecuador as a missionary, a priest with great zeal for souls said to me (somewhat seriously and somewhat jokingly), “Why Ecuador? That mission is for the weak. If you want an authentic mission, it’s better to stay in Spain. It’s easier over there: you speak and they listen to you. The people are searching for God; the apostolate is easier. True mission is here, where you have to surrender yourself until at least a few learn to love God.”
I reflected on whether he was right or to what extent when another conversation came to mind, a conversation I had with another a great missionary priest who is literally giving up his life for souls.
