In 2006, the then Archbishop of Manabí, José Mario Ruiz Navas, asked the Servant Sisters of the Home of the Mother to direct the Holy Family Educational Center. The school had 180 students, but was on the brink of closing and the administrative situation was precarious.
When the Servant Sisters of the Home of the Mother, all permits for operation were obtained and improvements were made at all levels: pedagogical, administrative, infrastructure, etc. The essential priority was to help the children and parents, as well as the rest of the community of Playa Prieta, to grow closer to the Lord. The majority of the students have a strong spiritual life, and commit themselves to being catechism teachers or participating in youth groups. Many parents and teachers have received the sacrament of marriage and begun a serious spiritual life.
In 2010, Holy Family Educational Center opened the possibility for the students to complete their High School studies. Now the students can begin their academic career in pre-kindergarten and continue through High School.
Through the years, the school has made impressive academic improvements. The training courses for our professors have caused great academic achievements. Since the first High School graduating class all the alumni have passed the CENESID tests (the Ecuadorian equivalent to the United States SAT), and have obtained favorable results in regards to their acceptance into universities.
In april 2016, a terrible earthquake destroyed the entire school and took the lives of Sr. Clare Crockett, SHM, and five young postulants. Thankfully, there were no children in the school at the time. Other Sisters and postulants were injured. Thanks to the help of our benefactors, we were able to rebuild the school little by little (see Reconstruction of Our School at Playa Prieta) and it is now more beautiful than ever.
