Created for Greatness

The Servant Sisters in Lumezzane organized a ¨Winter Get-together¨ for girls aged 11-14 from December 28th-30th.  14 girls came in all.  The theme of the get-together was ¨Created for Greatness¨, inspired by a saying from Pope Benedict XVI: ¨The world promises you comfort, but you were not made for comfort. You were made for greatness. ¨

It all began the morning of December 28th.  After welcoming the girls, we began the get-together with a time of prayer before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, with points of meditation given by Sr. Teresa.  She explained the theme and helped them to go more deeply into its meaning.

Later on, we made Christmas cookies.  We all went outside after lunch to play a scavenger hunt throughout the town.  They had to find nativity set figurines and then later build the nativity scene in our house.  After the game, we watched the second part of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy.  We had already seen the first movie with a lot of the girls a few weeks beforehand.  We would have to write to a book in order to explain the whole story, but it’s enough to say that it was very enriching and in the meetings that we had with the girls afterwards you could tell that it had impacted them a lot and that they were able to have profound insights on the movie.

The next day, we saw the last movie in the trilogy as well.  Moreover, we had a scavengur hunt based on the movie, where every challenge had a moral or spiritual application.  When the game was over, the girls had to answer our questions about the lessons we had gotten out of the movie and which we had discussed beforehand.

On the last day we went to see a live-sized Bethlehem next to the river in another town close by.  It was pretty; they even had real sheep and doves. From there, we headed off to Our Lady of Mercy Shrine, up in the mountains.  It was pretty cold out, but was worth the trek in order to visit Our Mother Mary and to pray a mystery of the rosary to her there.

Before the closing mass, we had a meeting about knowing how to lead meetings, incorporating the get-together motto.  We talked about whether the girls had great ideals and desires for their lives, and if they did, what they were.  It was interesting hearing what they had to say.  We saw the importance of having big ideals and of asking the Lord what it is that He wants of us.  Furthermore, we spoke about how God can change our plans, even the good ones we have, and ask us for something different than what we had imagined.  The get-together drew to a close after going to Mass that afternoon.

We did a lot in those few days!  The girls learned quite a bit and they had the chance to get to know Our Lord and Our Mother Mary better and to spend time with them…which is what is most important!
