For Love of Christ

DiaconadoOn December 17th, the Home of the Mother welcomed two new deacons: Brother René Zambrana y José Luis Saavedra were ordained deacons by Bishop José María Yanguas, the Bishop of Cuenca, at the cathedral in the ¨enchanted city¨, as Cuenca, Spain is called.  As the diaconal ordination rite says, the brothers committed themselves to a life of celibacy, constant prayer, and to be a minister of the altar until the end of their days.  It was a foretaste of what they, as Servant Brothers and consecrated to God, will soon experience when they make their final vows this upcoming 8th of September.

After the ordenation ceremony, the celebration continued in Priego – a small town outside of Cuenca – with a lunch for family and friends.  Afterwards, we saw a video about John Paull II, where he told his own vocation story, but from a different viewpoint, seeing as the brothers had just been ordained and Blessed JPII said in the video, ¨I was ordained a priest when I was 26 years old.  56 years have gone by since then.  Looking back and remembering these years of my life, I can assure you that it is worth it to dedicate yourselves to Christ’s mission and, for love of Him, to consecrate yourselves to the service of mankind.¨  These words, taken from a short video that the Novice Brothers had made as a keepsake for the event, served as an example and a huge push on the new deacons´ path of abandonment in God’s Hands.  John Paul II spoke with passionate enthusiasm about his ministerial experience; the same ministry that the two Servant Brothers had begun that same day.

And as if John Paul II´s example was not enough, the next, almost all the Servant Brothers, accompanied by Father Rafael, set out on a pilgrimage, ¨Following the footsteps of St. John of Avila¨, seeing as Benedict XVI had just announced in the last WYD that he would be the next saint to be proclaimed Doctor of the Church.  The Apostle of Andalusia, Spain left a profound impression in the Servant Brothers because of his bold abandonment to God’s Will and his intimate relationship with the mystery of salvation.  ¨Gather together in Bethlehem’s stable and pray to Him with faith¨, the saint said in one of his writings.  The new deacons especially admired his example in preaching, which he carried out in the name of the Church by means of his priestly ordination.  St. John of Avila told a young and famous preacher, Brother Luis de Granada, about giving homilies: ¨I do not understand how you can talk so long, with such grandiloquent words, and yet not say anything at all.  If you do not talk about the Lord’s Passion and His Redemption, I do not know what good it does you.¨  Today, Brother Luis is known for his writings or meditations on the passion...superbly done.

Receiving grace upon grace, the pilgrims continued on their trip, visiting the Sanctuary of El Rocio, Our Lady of Araceli, Seville Cathedral and La Giralda, St. Angela of the Cross, and ¨many other things as well¨ (cf. John 21:25), more than we could possibly tell about in this brief article.  Because God grants these things to His friends...because He wants to.

Merry Christmas to each and every one of you and Happy New Year, 2012!
