From the 27th-28th of December we had a get-together for girls 12 years and up in the Shrine of Our Lady of the Eagle, where the Servant Sisters have a community.
17 girls participated in the day and some of them also spent the night. They came from Alcalá and the town of Dos Hermanas.
We began with a time of prayer and then went to see Baby Jesus to sing Him some Christmas songs. Around 12 o’clock we began preparing some German Christmas cookies with the intention of bringing them to the residents of one of the nursing homes here in Alcalá. A family that owns a bread shop lent us an oven to use, and they were so good and generous that they even brought it up to our house so that we could bake the cookies.
In the afternoon, we watched the movie “A Walk to Remember”, and afterwards had a discussion about it. Towards 5 p.m. Fr. Jose Manuel, the parish priest of the parish of the Immaculate came, and we had the grace of having the chance to go to confession. What better gift for the Baby Jesus than that? And at 7:30 we attended Mass and sang in St. James parish.
To finish off the day, taking advantage of having the oven still, we ate some great-tasting pizzas for supper, and afterwards, we went outside to play for some time in the square outside the Sanctuary, since it was not too cold.
During the get-together we also made a rosary bracelet, played games and practiced Christmas songs, because on the morning of the 28th, after prayer and helping clean up, we went to sing at the nursing home of Our Lady of Miracles here in Alcalá, which is directed by the Daughters of Charity. The girls brought the cookies and offered them to the elderly, who accepted them with pleasure, commenting on how good they were. It was a beautiful experience.
Afterwards, we went to sing songs to Paca, an elderly woman who lives alone, and to whom the sister bring Communion once a week. She was so happy that she teared up out of happiness. The girls learned that with the very little that we give of ourselves we can do much good.
We also had a meeting about prayer in which the girls were very participative, and afterwards, during lunch, we celebrated Isabel´s birthday, with a chocolate cake. Then they made some very pretty cardboard plates and with celophane paper formed a platter of cookies so that each one could bring it home to their family. We hope that they enjoyed them at home too.
They were very intense days and it was a good way to spend Christmas vacations.
