The ceremony of the perpetual vows of a Discalced Carmelite nun in Montecristi, Manabí (Ecuador), September 6, 2015.
Last Sunday, September 6, 2015, Sr. Gema of the Mother of God, who once formed part of the Home of the Mother Youth, made her solemn profession as a Discalced Carmelite. She discovered her vocation at a very young age, and when she was 19 she entered the Carmelite Monastery of Christ Crucified in Montecristi, in the province of Manabí, Ecuador.
The Servant Sisters and the girls from Chone and Playa Prieta attended the Mass presided by His Excellency Aníbal Nieto, bishop of Yaguachi and himself a Discalced Carmelite. After the ceremony, we went to the parlor to congratulate Sister. She told us the whole story of how she found her vocation and responded to all the questions we had for her. We sang some of the songs that we knew she used to like when she was a member of the Home.
She told us that the Home of the Mother was like a bridge for her in the path of her life. She was happy in the Home, but realized that it was just a bridge towards her true vocation. In the same way that one cannot build a house on top of a bridge, she knew that she couldn’t build her life on the Home of the Mother, because it would only be an obstacle for other youth in their own path. She understood that she had to do God’s will and He had placed the Home in her path to help her do His will. Sr. Gema is very grateful to the Lord for her vocation, and encouraged the girls to seek the will of God in their lives.
It is a great joy for us that a girl from the Home of the Mother is responding with fidelity and steadfastness to her to call to be a Carmelite nun. Let us pray for her, so she may be more faithful each day, and let us pray for all those who are called to the contemplative life.
