Thank you letter for all the help and prayers recieved as a response to the earthquake in Manabi, Ecuador.
By now most of you know of the tragic events that took place in Ecuador last Saturday, April 16th, 2016. At 6:58 (Ecuadorian time) a terrible earthquake, of a magnitude of 7.8, and an incredible amount of aftershocks, hit the Ecuadorian coast. Our communities in Ecuador were also affected, especially the community in Playa Prieta—the building in which the sisters lived collapsed and trapped 4 sisters and 7 postulants. As soon as we heard, the sisters began to pray before the Blessed Sacrament and we began to ask for prayers for our sisters.
Since then an impressive number of people from around the world have contacted us to say that they are united to us in sorrow and in prayer. We have felt the warm support of your love, your prayers, and your readiness to help us in any way possible.
Many friends, especially in Ecuador, have done everything to help us—even risking their lives going into the ruins of the house to rescue the sisters. Others have aided the rescue, or taken care of the wounded sisters who survived, o transporting the bodies of our sisters who’ve passed away. As an example, a group of 20 medical students in Guayaquil wrote us a few hours after hearing the news, letting us know they were ready to help in any way possible.
Many others from Spain, the United States and other places have insistently offered to immediately fly to Ecuador to help the sisters and, through the Missionary Groups of the Mother, so many others who are in great need. So many of you have prayed so much for the sisters and for all of us. We know of whole convents that have united their prayers to ours. Our email accounts are full of emails, the phone hasn’t stopped ringing all weekend, our website and social media have so many hits that we’ve had to increase the capacity of the server so that the website wouldn’t crash.
Thank you, thank you, thank you to all of you. Thanks for having written and called. Thank you to those who have preferred not to call or write so as not to bother in these moments, but we know that you are following the masses and updates that we’ve been giving on the website and in social media. Thanks to all who have prayed. Thanks to all who are looking for ways to help us.
We want to ask forgiveness from all those that we weren’t able to tell personally. We know that you understand very well that these have been tense moments of great suffering—and we haven’t been able to contact everyone personaly. And we appreciate your understanding and closeness.
Many of you are asking to help us in many different ways. It is obvious that the hardest part of the earthquake is yet to come for those who’ve survived. Through our Facebook we’ve heard that there are many families in Playa Prieta who are suffering from hunger and a lack of clean drinking water. Remember that before the earthquake Playa Prieta suffered a terrible flood, which had left many families without anything. But not only in Playa Prieta. In Chone and Guayaquil, the sisters are witness to many needs. For those of you who would like to help our brothers and sisters affected by the earthquake, you can find information here in this link:
May the Lord bless you all. May our Blessed Mother bless you all. Thank you with all our heart.
