Mission R.O.S.

mision1Holy Family School organized Mission R.O.S. (Recreation – Olympics – Solidarity), to raise money for Ethiopia.

The Freshmen of Holy Family School in Playa Prieta organized an event of Recreation, Olympics and Solidarity. Why? We saw in religion class a video and letter from Fr. Christopher Hartley, a missionary priest in Somalia (Ethiopia) and we were left completely taken aback by what we saw. We could not believe what the children, youth, adults and elderly people are suffering in that place. Upon knowing the situation that they are living in Ethiopia and seeing the generosity and enthusiasm of Fr. Christopher, we started to brainstorm to see what we could do to help our Ethiopian brothers and sisters. We were sad to see that on the list of benefactors that Fr. Christopher named in gratitude for their help, Ecuador was not on the list. What a shame! After all the help that we received after the earthquake that completely shook our lives, are we not to give back what we’ve received?

The idea that was most successful was Mission R.O.S., which just so happened to sound like S.O.S. and that was very fitting. We encouraged all the classes to participate in a soccer championship; each older student payed 50 cents and the younger students payed 25 cents. Before the championship we printed off the pictures that Fr. Christopher had sent us so that all the students could see what was happening with the drought in Ethiopia and see what we were raising money for.

We organized the teams, we were the referees, and of course, there were prizes for the winners. We will soon have the names of the winners. All the students are very excited!

This letter also got around to the other classes and they were very impressed by what they read. The other classes have also come up with some ideas and more activities that they are willing to carry out.

We also heard that a girl in high school gave a donation of all the money that she had saved up: 8$. That act of generosity impressed us a lot and it has moved other people to do the same. Other students have felt the call to be missionaries by seeing the example of Fr. Christopher.

We are going to make a money box for each class room so that each day the students can put into it whatever amount they wish.

From this first activity alone we earned 120$, but this is just the beginning. The goal is to reach a higher amount. We have a lot of ideas and different projects and we will keep you up to date as we go along. Stay tuned and please keep this initiative in your prayers.

Thank you for everything! The freshmen class of Holy Family School.
