On Saturday, September 22, the Servant Sisters of the Home of the Mother in Valencia went to Castellon’s Mater Dei Seminary for a beginning of the year retreat with the youth who are preparing to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation and their catechists. The theme for the retreat was freedom and all the activities throughout the day were related to the theme.
We began the encounter explaining to the youth what we were going to be doing throughout the day followed by a game related to the theme. After the game, we headed to one of the classrooms in the Seminary to watch a video about freedom, which one of the sisters had prepared. Afterwards, we split up into several small groups to discuss what we had seen and to share our thoughts on the video. It was a very enriching moment. Each one of the youth cleared up his or her doubts related to the topic. Some came to the conclusion that today, we live in a society that talks about freedom constantly, but does not let us be truly free. Another subject that came up was sin, something that is also tying society down, especially the youth. Once the discussion was over, we ate on one of the Seminary’s patios. After lunch, we went to the chapel for a Holy Hour guided by one of the sisters. The Sacrament of Confession was also available for whoever wished to go. With the Holy Hour we ended our day of retreat in the best way possibl; in the presence of Jesus in the Eucharist.
We are grateful to God for this day that he granted us and we ask Him to give us the grace and strength to begin this new school year with courage and generosity, like St. Ignatius says at the beginning of his Spiritual Exercises.
