Prayers and Holy HoursFor parishes, schools, and for people of all ages

Pentecost

This is a Prayer Vigil for the feast of Pentecost, the coming of the Holy Spirit onto the apostles and Mary in the upper room, after the resurrection of Jesus (Acts 2:1-4).
We suggest the following scheme for your vigil, but feel free to adapt it to your needs!

1. Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament
2. Recitation of Vespers
3. Spiritual Reading or Points of Meditation
4. Silent Prayer (fifteen minutes)
5. Recitation of the following Prayer (standing)

We also suggest mixing in a few songs during the times of silence, especially if the participants are not used to praying or are easily distracted!  Be sure to print out copies so that everyone can follow along.  Download as pdf.

Pentecost Prayer Vigil

By Father Rafael Alonso Reymundo.

L: (eader) We profess our faith in the Holy Trinity.
A: (ll) We believe in God the Father, in God the Son and in God the Holy Spirit. They are not three gods but one God and three persons.

L: We confess that the Holy Spirit exists.
A: He is the third Person of the Holy Trinity. He is different from the Father and the Son but eternally proceeds from these Two.

L: We acknowledge that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son by exhalation of eternal love.
A: It is the gift of the Father and the Son to the Church. He is our consoler and He defends us against the attacks of the enemy.

L: We believe in the Holy Spirit, Lord and Giver of life,
A: Who proceeds from the Father and the Son and with the Father and the Son He is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets.

L: He is the Lord of our souls,
A: Because He frees us from the slavery of sin.

L: He is the Giver of life,
A: because as the soul gives life to the body, grace gives life to the soul.

L: The Holy Spirit is worthy of the same adoration as the Father and the Son.
A: because the Divine Persons are equal in their Divinity.

L: The prophets spoke to us and taught us the mysteries of God,
A: moved by You, Holy Spirit.

L: From You comes the knowledge of future things, understanding of hidden truths, the distribution of gifts, the celestial citizenship,
A: From You comes unending joy, perseverance until the end and eternal glory.

L: Fill our souls with Your fruits
A: the forgiveness of our sins, the enlightenment of our intelligence so that we may know the divine mysteries, the help to be able to fulfill the commandments, the hope for eternal life.

L: Your fruits Lord,
A: fill us with sweetness and joy.

L: Just as our body becomes radiant with the rays of light
A: in the same way our souls guided by You, Holy Spirit and filled with your grace become more spiritual.
L: When the sun comes out everything can be seen clearly
A: in the same way the soul that is enlightened by the Holy Spirit is able to see things that they ignored before.

L: Without Your help there is nothing within man that is innocent and valuable.
A: You can clean that which is stained, cure the one who is sick, give warmth to the cold heart, put upright the one who falls, lead on the right path the one who has gone astray, guide our souls to the safe port of salvation and eternal joy.

L: You who manifested Yourself with fullness on Pentecost.
A: Manifest Yourself now among us and vivify your Church, founded by Jesus Christ the first Paraclete.

L: You who appeared in the form of a dove and under the form of fire, You who make us simple and inspire us to work
A: Make us simple and pure in body and in soul and inspire us with apostolic zeal.

L: Stay with us,
A: Remain with Your Church and guide it.

L: You have received that which Jesus Christ obtained for us on the Cross.
A: Guide us to the complete truth.

L: In the same way that dried wheat cannot make a firm and compact dough if it is not humid,
A: In the same way we who are many cannot be converted into only one thing with Christ without the water that pours forth from Heaven.

L: We turn our hearts and gazes towards You because we are in need of your holiness.
A: You who are the fountain of sanctification, You are light for our intelligence, You are clarity for our reason.

L: You are inaccessible because of your nature
A: but You have made yourself accessible because of your goodness.

L: We need the Holy Spirit
A: for our perfection and renovation.

(We kneel down. Short time of silence. Song)

L: Because of You,
A: we can lift our hearts up to God, the weak are lead by your hand, and those who are progressing reach perfection.

L: Because of You,
A: Paradise is restored

L: Because of You,
A: we are able to go to the Kingdom of God.

L: Because of You,
A: our affections and intentions are made pure.

L: Because of You,
A: we obtain filial adoption.

L: Because of You,
A: we can call God our Father.

L: Because of You,
A: we can participate in the grace of Christ.

L: Because of You,
A: we have the right to be called sons and daughters of the light.

L: Because of You,
A: we can participate in eternal life.

L: Because of You,
A: we are able to contemplate and one day enjoy, the goods promised to us by Christ.

L: You enlighten the clean of heart
A: and you make them spiritual because of their union with you.

L: You fill everything with power,
A: and You distribute your gifts according to the faith of your servants.

L: As the arid land cannot produce fruits if it does not receive water,
A: in the same way we who before were like dry wood, would have never been able to give fruit without the rain that comes from Heaven.

L: The same way in which the dry tree when it receives water starts to germinate,
A: in that way also, our sinful soul after receiving from the Holy Spirit the gift of repentance, begins to produce fruits of holiness.

L: Lovingly watch over Your Church,
A: Conserve the integrity of the faith, the charisma of infallibility and its multiple manifestations of sanctity.

L: May all of us,
A: fulfill with fidelity the mission to bring souls to God, especially young people.

L: You who use our feeble words as an instrument;
A: You also make us perfect interiorly.

L: God has given us a great protector and helper
A: May we remain vigilant so that we can open up the doors of our heart to Him

L: He never gets tired of looking for us
A: So that He may pours his gifts on us.

L: It does not take long for us to understand that which we want to understand
A: For in the moment that you touch our minds, You teach us.

L: When you enlighten the soul,
A: You transform it.

(We kneel down. Short time of silence. Song)

L: Help us not to give importance to worldly things
A: and put all our hope in heavenly things

L: Free us from fear and cowardliness
A: and give us a generous and determined strength in our soul.

L: Following the example of the Apostles, let us not be intimidated by those who persecute us,
A: and may we remain tenaciously united to the love of Christ.

L: May we be perceptible and docile to what the Holy Spirit inspires us in our heart,
A: and may we dispose ourselves to receive the gifts that He gives us and the decisions that He inspires us to make.

L: Why should we feel alone if the Holy Spirit is with us?
A: Why should we feel insecure or anguished if the Paraclete looks after us?

L: Why do we look for happiness in places where we know we cannot find it?
A: Why does it take us so long to understand that there is no greater joy than the joy we experience when we have a deep relationship with the Sweet Guest of our soul?

L: We repeat the words that our Lord said in the Last Supper.
A: I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always,
the Spirit of truth, which the world cannot accept, because it neither sees nor knows it. But you know it, because it remains with you, and will be in you. (Jn. 14. 16-17)

L: We have been sealed with the promised Holy Spirit.
A: so that we may eternally belong to Him in a perpetual covenant.

L: We remember now in Your presence that we have been marked with your seal,
A: You have bestowed on us Your gifts of wisdom, knowledge, understanding, fortitude, counsel, piety and fear of God.

L: We need your seven holy gifts.
A: so that we can promptly follow your holy inspirations.

L: With the gift of counsel,
A: you teach how we have to do the will of the Father and not our will.

L: Filled with piety and gratitude,
A: we recognize that what we have been given is by the consent and the grace of the Holy Spirit.

L: Fill us with your inspirations,
A: so that under your protection and with your help we are moved to love God above all things. We are lead to love our neighbor, practice the virtues and make good resolutions.

L: He will defend us,
A: because we belong to Him, we are sealed by Him.

L: Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with which you were sealed for the day of redemption. (Eph.4, 30)
A: We never want to doubt the faithful love that He has for us.

L: May we learn from the first Christians and may we let ourselves be newly catechized.
A: “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?” (1 Cor. 6, 10)

L: These brothers of ours lived in a pagan environment and they were persecuted many times.
A: but the Holy Spirit, the Sweet Guest of our soul, was their consolation in the middle of their sadness and persecutions from the world.

L: They knew how to bear witness to Jesus Christ with their lives and with their words,
A: proclaiming their faith in all places and circumstances.

L: Many times we see the reality of the Word of God
A: “But when you are handed over, do not worry about how to speak or what to say; what you are to say will be given to you when the time comes, because it is not you who will be speaking; the Spirit of the Father will be speaking in you” (Mt. 10: 19-20)

L: We must bring God,
A: to a world that needs to be freed from slavery.

L: We need to treat our Lord with trust and simplicity, we have to know that He is near us and we must constantly ask for His help.
A: Only in this way will be strong and will we be able to go “against the current”. We will be able to talk about God without fear and false complexes.

L: We have a very high dignity,
A: We are sons and daughters of God, brothers and sisters of Jesus Christ, heirs of the Kingdom which He has prepared for us.

L: Come Holy Spirit.
A: Teach us.

L: Come Holy Spirit.
A: Enlighten us.

L: Come Holy Spirit.
A: Strengthen us.

L: Come Holy Spirit.
A: Comfort us.

L: Come Holy Spirit.
A: Defend us.

L: Come Holy Spirit.
A: Nourish us.

L: Come Holy Spirit.
A: Fill us.

L: Come Holy Spirit.
A: Heal us.

L: Come Holy Spirit.
A: Sanctify us.

L: Come Holy Spirit.
A: Justify us.

L: Come Holy Spirit.
A: Choose us.

L: Come Holy Spirit.
A: Inspire us.

L: Come Holy Spirit.
A: Console us.

L: Come Holy Spirit.
A: Free us.

L: Come Holy Spirit.
A: Guide us.

L: Come Holy Spirit.
A: Glorify us.

L: Come Holy Spirit.
A: Help us.

L: Your action,
A: is gentle and mild.

L: Those who posses You
A: are filled with joy.

L: Your yoke,
A: is light.

L: Your coming,
A: is full of light and truth.

L: Your goodness,
A: protects us from evil.

L: Your love
A: is a bond of union.

(We kneel down. Short time of silence. Song)
