Enthronement of the Sacred Heart in the family home

Introduction:

For a many years, the enthronement of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in homes was a practice of piety that was very widespread among the faithful. This simple act aims to put the family - the basic element of society - under the protection of Jesus Christ. At the same time, the family that enthrones the Sacred Heart in their home confesses Jesus Christ as their King and their Lord. It is such an important practice that, if undertaken seriously, can bring renewal to the world.

In the enthronement, an image of the Sacred Heart is put in a prominent place in the house. That image of the Lord is not a mere decoration, but rather is a public confession of our love for Jesus Christ, of our desire to do his will and to honor him, and to count on him in all our decisions and endeavors.

It is recommended to have the act of enthronement on a significant date for the family, such as the wedding anniversary of the parents or the birthday of the oldest child, so that it can be remembered easily and renewed frequently.

Ideally, the act would be presided over by a priest who, in addition to blessing the image, could also bless the whole house. However, if this is not possible, it is enough for the image to be blessed beforehand. In that case, the ritual would be presided over by the head of the family.

It is very important that the family prepares themselves well spiritually in order to live this act fully aware of what is taking place. The days before the consecration, it would be good to speak to your children about the act that is going to take place and the reasons why it is being done. On the morning of the enthronement, it would be good if possible, to all go to Confession, to go to Mass together, and to receive Communion. And, of course, it is a big day for your home, so it is also recommended that you celebrate it!

If you do yet not know about the 12 promises of Jesus to those who have a devotion to His Sacred Heart, learn about them here.

Ritual for the Enthronement of the Sacred Heart in the family home

Reader 1 (or Priest) : Our Lord made twelve promises to Saint Margaret Mary of Alacoque for those who would honor and love His Sacred Heart. Two of these promises are directly related to the family:

1. I will establish peace in their families.

2. I will bless every home where an image of My Heart shall be exposed and honored.

This family believes in the promises of God. That is why we have gathered here today, to enthrone this image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the center of our home.

Reader 2: Lord Jesus, you have united us as a family. Before the image of your Sacred Heart, through our good Mother and your Mother, we want to consecrate our family today.

You, who in the company of Mary and the disciples, blessed the spouses during their wedding at Cana. Bless us abundantly today.

Reader 1:  Lord Jesus, You offer us your Heart as a sign and pledge of how much you love us; give us, day by day, the strength of your love, so that we, this family that invokes You, may love each other with great dedication.

Enlighten us in our doubts, counsel us in our difficulties, and forwarn us in temptation; console us in our sufferings; guide us in our decisions and, above all, light in our hearts a great love for You and our neighbors.

Reader 2: May our life be a testimony of faith, hope, and charity in the midst of the world; may we do good to those around us; and at the end of our pilgrimage through this world, may we be united with You in heaven, with your Holy Mother, with the saints and our loved ones who have gone before us.

Reader 1: Therefore, Jesus, before the image of your Heart, we promise this to you. This is what we ask of you and this is what we hope from You, who live and reign with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit and are God forever and ever. Amen.

Reader 2: We pray for the needs of our family.

Reader 1:  O God, our loving Father, who sent your Son, Jesus Christ, our Redeemer, to the home of Mary and Joseph, to form the Holy Family of Nazareth: inspire us to follow His example and to imitate His generous love in our family life.

All: Lord, hear our prayer.

Reader 2:  Lord, help our families to remain united in the Heart of Christ, in loving union between parents and children. Teach us to recognize and defend the sanctity of marriage; to generously accept the gift of life; to proclaim the inestimable value of each member of the family.

All: Lord, hear our prayer.

Reader 1: Grant us the grace to give of ourselves in generous service to our family, reflecting the love that Jesus had for Mary and Joseph, so that we may turn our home into a true domestic Church, with the Lord as its center.

All: Lord, hear our prayer.

Reader 2: Teach us to discover Christ in the difficulties that may arise in our home and to find joy in the cross of Christ, united to Him.

All: Lord, hear our prayer.

Reader 1: Care for and protect our family, so that we may all be faithful to the Gospel and always walk along paths of holiness.

All: Lord, hear our prayer.

Reader 2:  Lord Jesus, this family is prepared to answer your call. In reparation for the abandonment and apostasy of so many souls, we want to declare You our beloved King, and consecrate the joys, the works and the sorrows, the present and the future of this home, which from now on wants to belong only to You.

Reader 1:  Bless those who are here present. Bless also those who, by the will of God, death has taken away. Bless, Jesus, those who are not here. In the name of the Virgin Mary, we beg you, O Heart full of love, deign to establish in this house your kingdom of charity.

The entire family reads this form of Consecration approved by St. Pius X for the enthronement of the Sacred Heart in families’ homes:

All:  O Sacred Heart of Jesus, who made known to St. Margaret Mary Your ardent desire to reign over Christian families, behold us assembled here today to proclaim Your absolute dominion over our home.

Henceforth, we propose to lead a life like unto Yours, so that among us may flourish the virtues for which You promised peace on earth, and for this end we will banish from our midst the spirit of the world which You abhor so much.

You will reign over our understanding by the simplicity of our faith. You will reign over our hearts through the ardent love we have for You alone; and may the flame of this love be kept burning in our hearts by the frequent reception of the Holy Eucharist.

Deign, O Divine Heart, to preside over our meetings, to bless our undertakings, both spiritual and temporal, to banish all worry and care, to sanctify our joys, and soothe our sorrows. If any of us should ever have the misfortune to grieve Your Sacred Heart, remind him of Your goodness and mercy towards the repentant sinner.

Lastly, when the hour of separation will sound and death will plunge our home into mourning, then shall each and everyone of us be resigned to Your eternal decrees, and seek consolation in the thought that we shall one day be reunited in Heaven, where we shall sing the praises and blessings of Your Sacred Heart for all eternity.

May the Immaculate Heart of Mary and the glorious Patriarch St. Joseph offer You this our Consecration, and remind us of the same all the days of our life. Amen.

Glory to the Divine Heart of Jesus, our King!

Reader 1: Sacred Heart of Jesus,

All: Have mercy on us.

Reader 2: Immaculate Heart of Mary,

All: Be our salvation.
