English Camp in Loeches, Madrid (Spain), from July 4th-14th, 2017.
This year there was a group of 66 people who got together in Loeches, including camp counselors, cooks, and sisters, for the 2017 English Summer Encounter. The group this year was very international as there were people from 13 different nations. This year’s theme was the same as all the other camps of the Home of the Mother, “The Joy of Living.”
During the camp we played many different games, had English classes, daily Mass, a candlelight rosary, crafts, and two difficult, but rewarding hikes. Each day we had a topic that we talked about and a game to go along with the topic. We talked about humility, purity, the Spiritual Battle, and many more interesting topics. Not even the unexpected rain storms could take away our joy and we continued on with our games inside the monastery.
Our cooks were two ladies from Argentina and Poland and the girls, hungry from all the activities, devoured the food they made. Thank you to our cooks!
The night games were a success. In one of the games the girls had their flashlights and they had to look for saints all throughout the monastery in order to find the key to open the treasure chest and find the hidden treasure.
Because of the heart in Madrid during the camp, many of our games were water games. In the game that we played based on humility, they had relay races. The girls divided into teams and beginning in a small pool, a member of each team had to get into the pool, get a water balloon, go to the next station, throw the water balloon to their partner who in turn had run with the water balloon in their hands that were covered in butter. The team that was able to get the most balloons into the bucket was the winner. They finished the game very dirty, but very happy.
The two hikes we took were to the nearby neighborhoods of Pozuelo de Rey and Torres. The girls sweated under the Marid sun, but they did not stop encouraging each other and singing in order to make the hike easier. They got to the destination very joyful and they were even happier to find lunch waiting for them!
The camp finished with the Circus of Joy in which each team participated by showing their talents and sharing the joy of living.
We hope that through all we have lived and learned in this camp, the girls have been able to have a true encounter with Jesus Christ and Our Mother, because only in them we find the true joy of living.
